bows

Am loving the big white bow on this little black dress. Not so much the big hair or anything else. Don't know that bows really suit me though. I am starting to become more resigned to the fact that I can't pull off every style... At least I don't feel like that here - hm, well, that's another train of thought altogether. Over-analyzing is a kind of full-time hobby of mine. [via {a glamorous little side project}]

Once I Pass'd Through a Populous City

Once I pass'd through a populous city imprinting my brain for future
use with its shows, architecture, customs, traditions,
Yet now of all that city I remember only a woman I casually met
there who detain'd me for love of me,
Day by day and night by night we were together - all else has long
been forgotten by me,
I remember I say only that woman who passionately clung to me,
Again we wander, we love, we separate again,
Again she holds me by the hand, I must not go,
I see her close beside me with silent lips sad and tremulous.

Swamped
Working from 8:30 am to 5:30 pm. The rest of the time spent with my parents. Lack of head-space and personal time = driving me kind of crazy. Oh and there is so much to learn. But this is just the transitional phase - hopefully I will be able to work out my own schedule, and also move out.
When I feel a little bit overwhelmed I do some online window shopping. Are these things not lovely? If I see lovely things I feel good about the world and everything. If I see a lot of ugly things though, then I feel like we've wasted the world's resources in manufacturing crap and we all deserve to be destroyed by global climate change. That's very depressing. So I try to look at pictures of lovely things.

Draw me a picture
A few months ago I went to the Osborne Collection of the Toronto Public Library for their exhibition 'When Cinderella Went to the Ball - Five Hundred Years of Fairy Tales'. I bought their exhibition catalogue because I loved so many of their pieces. Next week I will be taking some students from the Toronto School of Art for a tour on the history of illustration. It's all very exciting!
Here's some favourites I scanned in.
The Brave Tin Soldier: pop ups with moving figures. Hans C. Andersen. V. Kubasta. London: Murrays Sales & Service Co. © 1973. Printed in Czechosolovakia.

Pen-and-ink drawing by William Heath Robinson for "Tommelise" in Hans Andersen's Fairy Tales (New York: Henry Holt & Co., 1913). The old mother toad makes off with Tommelise in her walnut-shell bed: "This is just the wife for my son," said the toad.
Tales from Grimm. Freely translated and illustrated by Wanda Gag. New York: Coward-McCann, © 1936.
Pen-and-ink drawing by Wanda Gag from her retelling of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (New York: Coward-McCann, © 1938).
Papercutting of "Bremer Musicians" by Nelly Hofer (unpublished, ca. 2005).
Little Red Riding Hood. London: Dean and Son, [between 1857 and 1865].
The golden goose book: being the stories of The golden goose, The three bears, The 3 little pigs, Tom Thumb. With numerous drawings in colour and black-and-white by L. Leslie Brooke. London and New York: Frederick Wrne and Co., [ca. 1930?].
Cinderella. Designed by Inge Wolgast. Rostock: Lesemaus Miniaturbuchverlag, 2003. Number five in an edition limited to twenty-five copies.

Pen-and-ink design by Walter Crane for the cover of Bluebeard's Picture Book (London and New York: John Lane, [1898?]).

Grey skies and LAN jacks

This morning I woke up and the skies were very grey. Weather report says it might rain. I didn't want to wear my boots yet again, but I didn't want to risk wet feet either... To cheer myself up I decided to share a beautiful picture with you (via English Russia).
Now I am at college and about to go and try out all the LAN jacks in the library to see if they are working (oh, the joy).
A few nights ago and I was watching Lost in the MCR and they were paddling in a canoe out at sea, in the sun. I wanted to trade places with them - except the bit about being on an island which is moving randomly through time, and getting shot at by complete randoms.
