Reminder to self

read more Jean Rhys and Christopher Isherwood.

Incidentally I've only just realized that Rhys was one very nice looking lady.

Like. Very Much.

I know when you complicate things just to confuse me.

Girl Lego

This appeared on Emma's facebook stream recently. I'm keeping it aside because I might do something with it later.

"apparently Lego are launching 'a product line for girls'. Silly me, I thought they already had a product line girls played with. It's called Lego."

My Antonia

We used to linger a long while over our coffee in that sunny corner. Lena was never so pretty as in the morning; she wakened fresh with the world every day, and her eyes had a deeper colour then, like the blue flowers that are never so blue as when they first open. I could sit idle all through a Sunday morning and look at her. Ole Benson's behaviour was now no mystery to me.

'There was never any harm in Ole,' she said once. `People needn't have troubled themselves. He just liked to come over and sit on the drawside and forget about his bad luck. I liked to have him. Any company's welcome when you're off with cattle all the time.'

'But wasn't he always glum?' I asked. 'People said he never talked at all.'

'Sure he talked, in Norwegian. He'd been a sailor on an English boat and had seen lots of queer places. He had wonderful tattoos. We used to sit and look at them for hours; there wasn't much to look at out there. He was like a picture book. He had a ship and a strawberry girl on one arm, and on the other a girl standing before a little house, with a fence and gate and all, waiting for her sweetheart. Farther up his arm, her sailor had come back and was kissing her. "The Sailor's Return," he called it.'

Heal

In some ways, as one would expect, or at least hope.
In some ways, not as you'd expect, or I'd expect you to understand.

I showed you the envelope and when you were done and I took it away you said I'm sorry and held me simply. That again, from you and others, does just that.

Getting inked and pierced? So long as it does me good.

Nothing lasts forever, or is right always.

I hadn't realized

'Amittai was a man of action - the kind of guy who would have cracked his own arm off and stabbed his way out with the jagged end.'

- Ladies and Gentlemen, The Bible!, by Jonathan Goldstein  (2009, p. 217)

Down, wanton, down

Down, wanton, down! Have you no shame
That at the whisper of Love's name,
Or Beauty's, presto! up you raise
Your angry head and stand at gaze?

Poor bombard-captain, sworn to reach
The ravelin and effect a breach--
Indifferent what you storm or why,
So be that in the breach you die!

Love may be blind, but Love at least
Knows what is man and what mere beast;
Or Beauty wayward, but requires
More delicacy from her squires.

Tell me, my witless, whose one boast
Could be your staunchness at the post,
When were you made a man of parts
To think fine and profess the arts?

Will many-gifted Beauty come
Bowing to your bald rule of thumb,
Or Love swear loyalty to your crown?
Be gone, have done! Down, wanton, down!

- Robert Graves

Already

your absence is conspicuous, palpable, and overwhelming. Best I get to bed and forget about your sorry face.

Q: Do you actually want this to work out?
A: No, I want nothing more than for my relationships to burn to the ground.

... and you call me dumb.

Lunch

Always wanted to try the noodles place next to 公園號酸梅湯。

Old emails exchanges

Taking a gander through old email exchanges makes me marvel at the wonderful and brilliant people who have passed through my life (and those who are here still). Steadying influences; roller-coaster love affairs; buddies in bad times; pseudo-intellectual sparring matches and inspirations both culinary and musical.

Yes, love,  you have been lucky

Come live with me and be my love

Come live with me and be my love,
And we will all the pleasures prove
That valleys, groves, hills, and fields,
Woods or steepy mountain yields.

And we will sit upon the rocks,
Seeing the shepherds feed their flocks,
By shallow rivers to whose falls
Melodious birds sing madrigals.

And I will make thee beds of roses
And a thousand fragrant posies,
A cap of flowers, and a kirtle
Embroidered all with leaves of myrtle;

A gown made of the finest wool
Which from our pretty lambs we pull;
Fair lined slippers for the cold,
With buckles of th purest gold;

A belt of straw and ivy buds,
With coral clasps and amber studs:
And if these pleasures may thee move,
Come live with me and be my love.

The shepherds' swains shall dance and sing
For thy delight each May morning:
If these delights thy mind may move,
Then live with me and be my love.

- Christopher Marlowe

Think again, batman.

There was a young lady from Bude
Who went for a swim in the lake
A man in a punt
Stuck an oar in her ear
And said "You can't swim here, it's private."

Holy Sonnet XIV

Batter my heart, three-person'd God ; for you
As yet but knock ; breathe, shine, and seek to mend ;
That I may rise, and stand, o'erthrow me, and bend
Your force, to break, blow, burn, and make me new.
I, like an usurp'd town, to another due,
Labour to admit you, but O, to no end.
Reason, your viceroy in me, me should defend,
But is captived, and proves weak or untrue.
Yet dearly I love you, and would be loved fain,
But am betroth'd unto your enemy ;
Divorce me, untie, or break that knot again,
Take me to you, imprison me, for I,
Except you enthrall me, never shall be free,
Nor ever chaste, except you ravish me.

- John Donne
